Cultural Day Trip

STEP INTO THE WORLDS OF MEZCAL AND TEXTILES

A hulking wooden loom used by the same family of tapete makers for more than a century, an adobe comal cooking flor de calabaza quesadillas over a fire stoked with dried agave leaves, whispers of smoke rising up through the soil of an earthen pit roasting agaves. This day trip starts in the city, but it quickly leads straight into the rich cultural depths of Oaxaca’s outskirts, filled with tapetes, comida and mezcal.

  • Artisan Visit:

In many pueblitos across Oaxaca, you will meet artisans who are preserving and perpetuating their regional culture through breathtakingly beautiful products. From gorgeous clay pottery to intricately detailed tapetes, their handcrafts are woven into their heritage. These maestros are proud ambassadors of their community, and it will be our honor to share time with them in their workshops.

  • Local Lunch:

We’ve always found rich connections with people through food, and our favorite dishes are always made in the streets, in family-ran comals, and in backyard cookouts. This is where we will have an incredible lunch, filling up on home made dishes and being honored with the abundant hospitality of local chefs who invite us into their worlds.

  • El Corazón de Mezcal:

Oaxaca sits at the center of the mezcal universe, but the beating heart of this sacred spirit lies within those who actually make it. These mezcaleros are carrying on the traditions of both their families and culture, and we will be welcomed into their palenques to drink mezcal in the same lands where it has been masterfully, carefully made for centuries. This will connect you to Oaxaca in a deeply moving way that nothing else will.
